A Reiki Healing Experience

Having been attuned as a Reiki practitioner for just over a month, I welcomed the opportunity to give Reiki to people I don’t know. I went to the church where I had my attunement class, to participate in their monthly Experience Reiki afternoon. People can come in off the street and experience a free 20 minute session. Practitioners volunteer their time to give, and sometimes receive, Reiki.

A quickie for those who don’t know what this is. Reiki is allowing the universal life force energy to pass through your body and out your hands to another person. It is a modality of energy work or energy healing. Today we were laying our hands on, or just above, a person.

The afternoon was passing very peacefully, with each person receiving Reiki leaving in a slightly floating manner, feeling lightened by the experience. Then, June* came in. She wandered into the church, not sure what Reiki was or what she could expect from it. The man who was organizing the afternoon, met her and chatted a little while about energy work, and what happens when a person receives Reiki.

June decided to give it a try; and told us about how she has been living with chronic pain and unexplained fevers. I didn’t catch her entire story, but she had been living in pain for too long and treatment from her doctors wasn’t doing enough for her. She was taking the bull by the horns and looking into other ways of healing.

There were 4 of us, laying hands on June. One at her head, one on each side, and I was at her feet. Within a few minutes of holding her lower calves, I could feel her pain. I knew that she had been in a lot of pain. I didn’t know if she would cry, being in an unfamiliar place, with strangers’ hands all over her. What popped into my head next was some sage advice I was recently given: if she can’t cry, I’ll cry for her. She needed to let it out. Then I was thinking about that she needed to be handled gently, cradled gently in my hands and loved on, like a newborn baby. The energy just flowed, and the tears flowed.

When the time was up and I could see June’s face once again, she had been crying. She said that she fought it until she couldn’t breathe and had to take a breath. Then the tears fell. She described her time lying there with her eyes closed, as “seeing” our hands as having red-orange light coming out of them, and going into her, with all the energy swirling around. Her body seemed like it had gray dust floating up off of it. She said that she really felt the energy at her feet, and felt the love I was sending her.

I know that she had some big energies vibrating in her that were similar to some of my energies, that started to vibrate in congruity with her. It became obvious that she needs to spend time loving herself, as that is something that I, too, am working on.

By the time June was ready to sit up and come off the table, she had had a transformational experience. She had been bathed with healing energy and love, hugged, educated about energy work, and went off with a flyer advertising the next Reiki at the First Level class.

  1. What an incredible experience for both of you! I love the words you choose to describe it. And I bet she was changed in a big way after that. I remember my very first Reiki, there were seven people all working on me. I went in there very skeptical (just my nature I guess) and had a similar crying experience. Tears were flowing down in front of complete strangers. I was told this is a common first reaction to Reiki. A Reiki master teacher had cradled my head during the session and I had this vision of being a baby again. Very soothing and secure! Isn’t it amazing how powerful channeling energy can be and it truly helps our souls to heal.

  2. I hope that June was able to even get a glimpse of the fact that we all have the capability to heal ourselves. She doesn’t have to be totally dependent on her doctors. She can take an active part in her getting well.
