Early Morning

The energy roars and vibrates me awake.
Inner heat warms my feet just a little too much.
And my body won’t relax back into sleep.
Weird dreams left to drift away.

Peeling off my socks I try to cool down
So sleep will return
But it doesn’t.
So I rise.

Night lights gently illuminate darkness.
With the light left on by the side door
It’s enough that I don’t need to
Turn on any lights.

Well, maybe one fixture
But not fully.
It’s on so dimly
Only one bulb glows.

Tick, tick, tick from the wall.
Drip, drip, drip outside.
Whir of warmed air rushing.
My company this early morning.

The yellowed glow
From the computer screen
Illuminates the lined face
Unbrushed hair and resting bitch face.

Just a little too early.
Even the guinea pig’s still asleep.
